We saw a trend.
Customers were coming in to Sakura just for our Onigiri (Sakura Sushi, Grocery, and Japanese Restaurant). A bit of research led us to agree that this could be big! ONIGIRI are a perfect Snack: Quick and Fast!
How did the name come about?
Languages are an amazing cross-cultural, ever-evolving thing! The name ONI-ONI is a play on words using ONI (おに ) The Japanese word for Demon, and the first syllable of ONIGIRI ...uh... ONI
The Japanese sometimes will do that... shorten words to make it easier and quicker.
eg. Persu-Con - a clipped word meaning Personal Computer. English have shortened it to simply, PC.
So... Oni-Oni means Demon Onigiri.
ps. I was playing around with "ONI-NO-ONI". "Demon's Onigiri" - but that would be too much of a mouthful for English-primary speakers, I think? hehe!
Since we opened in March 2021, We have begun running Weekly Onigiri Specials. Flavours have included; Gyoza, and Guacamole. Soon to include; Yakitori Tsukune, Canadian Breakfast, Japan Curry, Pesto, Shogayaki, Arancini with Marinara, etc.
You'd be surprised how many times this seems to pop up. Sadly, we aren't.
First of all: IT'S RUDE, Discriminatory and somewhat Racist. We ARE Japanese. Looks might be deceiving, but Oni-Oni is owned and operated by a Local Japanese-Canadian Family.
Discrimination, Racism, Rudeness, Bullying, and Generally Rotten Behaviour WILL NOT BE TOLERATED in our shop. We are a Safe Space: for us and for you!
If you have any questions, please drop us a line and we'll get back to you quick! Ask us a Stumper, and you might see it posted here!
